About GameBox

A free game library and launcher for the Mac, built because nothing else did quite this job on this platform.

What it is

GameBox is a front end. It doesn't emulate anything itself — it finds the games you already own, organises them, decorates them with artwork and metadata, and hands each one to the right emulator when you double-click it.

The reason it exists is that a Mac game collection is usually scattered. Emulated consoles live in one folder structure, Steam keeps its own library somewhere else, Apple Arcade titles sit in the App Store, and native Mac games are wherever you put them. GameBox pulls all of it into a single browsable grid — 84 systems plus Steam, Mac and Apple Arcade — so the question stops being "where is that game" and goes back to being "what shall I play".

What it isn't

GameBox contains no games. No ROMs, no disc images, no BIOS files, and no links to anywhere that supplies them. It also doesn't bundle emulators — those are separate projects by other people, and you install the ones you want yourself. What you put in your library, and whether you have the right to it, is your responsibility.

It plays well with ES-DE

GameBox uses the same folder layout as EmulationStation Desktop Edition, deliberately. If you already have an ES-DE setup, GameBox can read the same ROM folders and the same scraped artwork rather than making you keep two copies of a collection that is probably already enormous. It will import ES-DE's metadata too. The two coexist happily on one Mac.

Free, and staying free

GameBox is free. There's no paid tier, no account, no advertising and nothing withheld for a subscription. There's a Patreon for anyone who wants to chip in toward development, and a Buy Me a Coffee for a one-off tip — but nothing in the app sits behind either.

Eleven languages

The entire interface — every menu, button, toggle and dialog, along with the built-in help and all thirteen of its topics — is translated into English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Thai. GameBox follows whichever of those your Mac is set to, the way any Mac app does.

Still being built

GameBox is at version 1.02 and actively worked on, with new features arriving regularly rather than in occasional big releases.

If something is broken, confusing, or missing, say so. Bug reports from people with real collections are the most useful thing there is.

New features usually turn up on the YouTube channel first, where you can watch them working before deciding whether to download anything.
